Minimum Order Rules for Shopify Wholesale Stores

A useful wholesale minimum-order policy balances fulfillment economics with a buying experience customers can understand and satisfy.

Short answer: Set minimums from actual order economics, choose MOV, MOQ, or both, segment thresholds by customer tag, communicate progress in the cart, and enforce the final rule at checkout. Review blocked-order data after launch.

Base rules on economics

Estimate pick and pack labor, packaging, payment fees, account support, freight handling, and expected gross margin. The minimum should protect a real constraint, not merely imitate another wholesaler.

Different buyer tiers may justify different thresholds because pricing, service, and shipping arrangements differ.

Choose a rule structure

PolicyUse when
Global MOVEvery eligible order must cover a common handling floor.
Tag-based MOVBuyer tiers have different prices or service costs.
MOQCases, production, or pick operations depend on units.
First-order minimumAccount setup or onboarding creates extra cost.
MOV plus MOQBoth value and quantity constraints matter.

Write clear buyer messages

State the threshold, the active buyer tier when useful, and what remains. Avoid internal abbreviations unless your customers already know them.

Place the message near cart totals and update it immediately as the cart changes.

Monitor after launch

Track how often checkout is blocked, the average shortfall, affected customer tags, and whether buyers add products or abandon. Combine analytics with support conversations before changing a threshold.

Review rules when freight rates, product margins, packaging, or wholesale programs change.
